Advice for straight people when an LGBT+ person comes out
Someone asked for an audio transcription, so here it is:
“I came out to my psychiatrist today. I’m surprised I haven’t done it already since I’ve been going for a year, but I guess I just never mentioned it *shrugs*. But today I did, and I just want to share the conversation that we had.”
My psychiatrist: So, Jessy, do you have any side activities other than school?
Me: Yeah, I run an LGBT blog.
My psychiatrist: Oh.. an LGBT blog. Are you… um… a part of that community?
Me: I’m bi
My psychiatrist: Oh! Well, you know, I’m ah.. yeah, I’m totally okay with that. I uh, it doesn’t matter to me *laughs uncomfortably* what gender you’re with! It’s just, you know, that you’re happy… so, I just want– I’m okay with it.”
Me: okay, cool. (¿¿¿)
“Okay, now here’s how I would have wanted this conversation to actually go.”
Me: I’m bi
My psychiatrist: cool
“I don’t know how many straight people are watching this, probably not very many, but if a
gayLGBT person comes out to you, and they’re not a super close friend or family, and they’re just casually dropping their sexual orientation whatever it may be, you don’t have to say anything other than cool. I just want to know that you heard the words come out of my mouth, and that you’re not about to kill me. That’s pretty much it. Sorry I filmed this vertically, I can’t film horizontally with my phone because have small hands. Alright, see ya later.”
